grid coordinate system
A plane-rectangular coordinate system usually based on, and mathematically adjusted to, a map projection where geographic positions (latitudes and longitudes) can be readily transformed into plane coordinates, and the computations relating to them can be performed by the ordinary method of plane surveying. See also universal transverse Mercator’s grid. See grid (iii).
